The second part is what I'm looking for advice on. The first part is fine, and I have no issue with it being instantaneous. In the case of my cosmology, several of the planes are quite similar if you used a certain menhir circle to travel to Alfheim, then walked 300 miles to a different menhir circle, and transported back to Midgard, you would be at a menhir circle 300 miles away from the first menhir circle.Īll that to say that Plane Shift sort of has two aspects:Ģ) Transporting you to a semi-random location on that plane (5-500 miles from your intended location). In normal D&D, plane shift moves you to a semi-randomized place on the target plane.
However, that's not what I'm asking about here. Plane Shifting to a transitive plane within your same world (ie - going from Midgard's material plane to Midgard's ethereal plane or astral plane) has no impeded aspects it works like normal D&D. I didn't go into perfectly great detail, so what you are suggesting (if I am understanding it correctly) may be what I already have in place. There is no Astral Plane for conduits from portals to weave through. Access to other planes is thus limited to specific locations on the Material Plane. The destination plane must connect with the plane of origin for travel to occur. Passage between non-Transitive Planes is still possible, but these planes must be coterminous or coexistent.The following spells can still work, but you will have to determine exactly how they function without an Astral Plane: dimension door, teleport, teleportation circle, teleport without error, and vanish.The following spells have elements that do not function in a cosmology without an Astral Plane: dimensional anchor and zone of respite.The following spells don’t work in a cosmology without anAstral Plane: astral projection, interplanar message, and summon monster (I–IX).
However, you may wish to exclude the Astral Plane from a cosmology you create. The Astral Plane is a vital piece of most planar arrangements because it makes movement across these vast distances possible.
